In this project, we were asked to choose an ecosystem and find a solution to a potential risk that ecosystem was facing. My group chose the Great Barrier Reef and the problem with its Crown-of-Thorns starfish. The Giant Triton, a sea snail in the reef, has been way over-collected which has caused an overall growth of the population of its main prey, the Crown-of-Thorns starfish. The Crown-of-Thorns starfish eats off the top layer off of most corals in the Great Barrier Reef. This is not a problem in most starfish densities, but when starfish densities start to become over populated, large portions of the reef can fall apart. The solution that we came up with for this problem is to raise awareness about the overfishing of the Giant Triton and the effect that has on the Great Barrier Reef overall.
